Prayin' Fer Rain

The sun has gone to bed
another day has passed
He steps out on his porch
to watch his cattle crunch the grass

he's never seen it this dry
so early in the year,
all the water holes are empty
and most ranchers share his fear,

he looks up to the heavens
and prays again tonight,
"Dear God I hope yer listenin'
and tonight will make it right,"

the crickets start to wake
and sing their chorus lullaby,
and somewhere a coyote's preachin
to the stars up in the sky

the moon rises slowly
to gaze across the land
the man sets down in his favorite chair
and stares at a calloused hand,

he dreads the day is coming
that he will have to sell,
this ranch has been his family's,
since great granddad sunk the well,

as he rises to go back in
a rumble stops his pace,
a cool breeze caresses,
as a drop lands on his face

he looks off to the west
and sees the storm come rollin in,
guess he was listenin after all
"Dear God, thanks again"

About Ryan Wermager:

Ryan wrote in early 2003:  I live in a dry area south and west of Colorado Springs in a little town called Penrose, and we got hit hard these last few years by drought and last year was the worse. I've been workin' on ranches since I was knee high to a grass hopper. I'm 23 years old, I work on ranches, rodeo, and I try to keep up the old traditions of cowboys.
