North Dakota rancher, writer, and poet Rodney Nelson shares photos taken on the last day of 2008 at his ranch in Sims. He told us:
We took a family photo so we could get our Christmas cards done. Showing off our new young Haflinger team, Waylon and Willie, are Rodney, Teri, Lafe, and Annika Nelson.
Haystacks:
We put the hats on just to have our picture taken.

South Dakota rancher, poet, and writer Robert Dennis shares photos from his ranch. He told us:
These are shots from the summer of 2008. A neighbor named Rick and my son Chance and I went to doctor some lame yearlings. I took the camera along to get some action shots. They caught them and I gave the shots to the cattle. It goes a lot faster if they don't let me rope!
Rick and Chance getting ready to catch one.
Rick's caught the front and Chance is moving in for the heels. Chance has the trap set and Rick is leading her forward.
Here's what it looks like from the ground after they stretch one out to hold it so vaccine can be administered.

It was a good day and we got quite a few treated. They even let me rope a few!
Robert Dennis has contributed other interesting photos to Picture the West, including:
Photos taken while he was "out riding on yearlings"
Family photos from the 1920s and 1940s
Photos and stories from his ranch and Red Owl
