Frank and Jan Kinnion, generous supporters of the San Juan Cancer Center
(read about their bracelets here)

[Francie Smiles adds: Both Jan and Frank are natives of Montrose. Jan is a courageous cancer warrior. Five years ago we did a fund raiser for the San Juan Cancer Center. The association with the Black Canyon Car Club and the club making and selling the bracelets raised $40,000 of the million we raised. After that was raised Jan and Frank continued to make bracelets by themselves and have given an additional $15,000,the past 3 years, which help go for debit cards, cookbooks, IV poles, thermometers for every chemo patient., and very high tech thermometers for the nurses.]

The poets, who came from North Carolina to Alberta and many places in between, got together at social events.

A pre-rodeo and festival kick-off party took place at the atmospheric Turn of the Century Saloon in Montrose, decorated with an 1883, 20' Brunswick bar, originally from Montana and leaded glass windows from the original Grand Imperial Hotel in Seattle. There was a generous catered supper for all.

Poets and others mingled, and some took to the stage, including Almeda Terry, Slim Farnsworth, Sam DeLeeuw, C.R. Wood, Geff Dawson, and others.

Saturday night, when the Rodeo and the competition were over, friends, old and new, relaxed at an impromptu get-together at the Black Canyon Motel, an hospital establishment appreciated by all who stayed under its roof.

The San Juan Western Heritage Festival and the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo experiences introduced many to the beauties of Montrose and its surroundings, and to its friendly and gracious inhabitants. "Excellence through competition" was celebrated, and there is no doubt that the rodeo will make some '"fair poets good and good poets better." Old friendships were renewed and new ones were created. The entire experience left all looking forward to the 2010 National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo and the San Juan Western Heritage Festival, to be held September 16-18, 2010.
