About From Texas to Montana:
In the late 1990's, Great Falls High School Rodeo Club, publishing under the name Dallywelter Press, issued three volumes in a series entitled From Texas to Montana. Each issue was set, proofread, and distributed from Great Falls, Montana, by students of Great Falls High School. Design and production was handled by Advance Litho of Great Falls.
Although the publication's goal-- to fund scholarships for GFHS students-- was never realized, never did the
project fail to break even financially. Jeff Streeby, GFHS Rodeo Club Faculty Advisor, was Editor and Compiler. Each issue featured substantially the work of a single poet (up to 15 pieces) and included examples of the work of several others.
The first issue featured selections by T.L. Thompson of Hico, Texas.
The second volume featured the work of "Cactus Jack" McCarty of Nara Visa, New Mexico, and introduced serial publication of D. J. O'Malley's (1867-1943) previously unpublished work, Reminiscences and Poems of Early Montana and the Cattle Range.
For the last number, contributions came from three countries-- the United States, Canada, and England. This last number, featuring Dennis Fischer's "The Buckaroo Fiddle," was a finalist for the 1998 Poetry Book of the Year Award from the Academy of Western Artists. "The Buckaroo Fiddle" also featured sections devoted to the works of The Cowboy Poets of Idaho and to The Palouse Country Cowboy Poets.
The last project of the GFHS's Dallywelter Press was to publish and to subsidize the production of a complete version of O'Malley's work through Cowboy Miner Productions. The series ceased publication when the faculty advisor relocated to California.
