Jack Thorp's Songs of the Cowboys (Museum of New Mexico Press, 2005), is a tribute to the man who was cowboy music's first collector; a significant contribution to western music history; and an enlightening and entertaining experience for readers and listeners. The book is edited and introduced by western historian and musician Mark L. Gardner, with illustrations by noted western artist and cowboy Ronald Kil, and accompanied by a CD recording performed by Mark L. Gardner and Rex Rideout.

Jack Thorp's Songs of the Cowboys includes songs and poems from Thorp's original book and an  expanded 1921 edition, and also a previously uncollected song found in a Thorp manuscript ("Ti Ri Youdy"). On the accompanying CD, Mark Gardner and Rex Rideout play the songs on vintage instruments in the style they would have been heard in Thorp's time.

Read more about the book at Mark Gardner's site, and read Jeri Dobrowski's report, with photos, on Gardner and Rideout's session at the 2005 Cody Cowboy Songs and Range Ballads event and her expanded article with more about the Thorp project.

Jack Thorp's Songs of the Cowboys (ISBN: 0890134782) book with accompany CD, is available from the Museum of New Mexico Press for $24.95 plus postage; from CD Baby, where you can listen to track samples from the CD; and from other booksellers, including Amazon.

Buck Ramsey’s Grass, With Essays on His Life and Work, a commemorative edition and CD edited by Scott Braucher and Bette Ramsey, with a foreword by Byron Price, is an exceptional production from Texas Tech University Press.  From the publisher's description, "First published as And As I Rode Out on the Morning, Buck Ramsey’s epic poem of cowboy life is a classic. In this edition, the editors have restored the poem’s original title, Grass, and have gathered insightful commentaries on Ramsey’s work from poets, musicians, historians, and others devoted to the cowboy way and movement. Completing the package are Ramsey’s original short story on which he based the poem and a CD of the original 1990 recording of Ramsey performing Grass in John Hartford’s home studio in Nashville, introduced by Andy Wilkinson."  Read more here at the publisher's site.

Buck Ramsey, known as "the spiritual leader of the cowboy poetry movement," left an important legacy when he died in 1998.  He received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and two Western Heritage Wrangler Awards from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame (now the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum) for his recordings. His work and life offer continual inspiration and education.

From the powerful opening backdrop of wide Wyoming skies and throughout the often dazzling canvas of the film, the viewer is captivated by this admirable woman's courage and determination.  See our feature about the Ridin' & Rhymin' here, which includes stills from the film and more about Georgie Sicking.

What Ever It Takes by DW Groethe includes his 18 tracks of his songs and poems. All are his original compositions, and "original" is nearly dangerous in his hands.  What Ever It Takes encompasses his usual sweet-to-strange range, with plenty of surprising, satisfying, solid entertainment on the generous 18 tracks. A hard-working ranch hand, DW is also one of today's true standout poetry and Western music talents.  In 2005, he was invited to the Library of Congress, performed at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage, and was invited to the National Folk Festival.  His book, West River Waltz, is due out at the end of December, 2005.

Of Horses and Men by Jay Snider includes 15 tracks of his original poetry. Jay has earned praise from all quarters, including top poet Pat Richardson, who says, "Jay Snider is the real deal. He seems to have it all: the ability to write good poems, he knows what cowboying is all about, and can recite it with the best of them. If you find a cowboy better at any of those three, I'd like to meet him.”  Jay, who has appeared at gatherings across the country, was a top winner at the Cowboy Poetry Rodeo for two years running, and has been invited to the 2006 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko (January 28-February 4, 2006).

From My Window and other poems by AWA Female Poet of the Year Yvonne Hollenbeck contains 65 new poems -- including the wildly popular "What Would Martha Do?"-- together with pioneer stories, vintage photos, poetry about quilts and quilters, and holiday poetry.

Among those with early praise for the book are Red Steagall (2006 Texas State Poet Laureate), who has written, in part, "The ability to project life scenes through poetry is a very special and rewarding gift...the window she paints poetic scenes through is very clear and easy for all of us to see ...She is truly a special gift to mankind.  Take the time to read her poetry and enjoy ranch life as she sees it "from her window."; and Pat Richardson, who comments, in part, "...People like Yvonne and Baxter Black have a gift that can't be learned. It's the ability to "connect" with people, and it doesn't matter if they've never been close to a cow, or raised with them ...It's the real gristle and bone of real ranch life from the mind of a great poet."

A Pair of Aces by Chris Isaacs' honors the memory and celebrates the talents of his friends, Cowboy Poetry greats Sunny Hancock and Larry McWhorter.   Beneath a Western Sky by Linda Kirkpatrick includes poetry and music. She describes the CD: "Each poem, song and background music has a special meaning to me.  My partner in Sunset Serenade, Frank Roberts, added his special touch with the songs, the background music and sound effects. Our other partner, Joe Wells, recited the classic poem, 'Bruin Wooin',' that I always enjoy hearing. The music from 'Lonesome Dove,' my favorite movie, backs my poem, 'Cupful of Mem'ries.' 'Old Yellow Slicker,' written by Debra C. Hill, and 'Rosie's Eagle,' written by J. W. Beeson, are two of my favorite contemporary poems, destined to be classics.  The poem written by my great, great, great, great grandfather Ambrose Smith, 'Neighbor Thompson,' shows the sense of humor in this old circuit rider Baptist preacher. The last poem, 'All My Trails Lead Home,' was co-written by Woody Woodruff; we tied for first place with it in the Academy of Western Artists Team Penning competition in July of 2005."

Unbridled: The Western Horse in Fiction and Nonfiction, edited by Michael Engelhard, is an anthology of horse stories featuring prose by poets and writers Virginia Bennett, Linda Hasselstrom, Linda Hussa, Laurie Wagner Buyer, and Carolyn Dufurrena. Their stories join those of Will James, Frederick Remington, Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt, Zane Grey; contemporary writers Max Evans, Edward Abbey, Thomas McGuane, Gretel Ehrlich; and others.

The publisher, The Lyons Press, describes the book:

The Western horse has transcended divisions of race, culture, gender, and age to become an American icon. Without it--and the stories it inspires--the West would be impoverished. While much has been written about cowboys and the West, no other anthology exists that focuses exclusively on the animal itself.

Unbridled assembles some of the best Western horse stories ever written. The Western horse is seen and described from a variety of perspectives. These are the stories of ranchers, cowboys, soldiers, hunters, trappers, Plains Indians, vaqueros, pioneer women, and even a president. Many of them are well known; some are waiting to be discovered. The unifying sentiment is their respect for and admiration of this most remarkable animal.
