Christmas Promise

You made outdoors Thy temple, Lord, to fit our simple prayer
That Christmas time may touch the hearts of all men everywhere
With Thine own brand of mercy, human kindness and the best
of good old freedom feelin's that we hold to in the West.

Don't let no hearts feel hopeless, Lord.  No matter who they are,
Help them look up for comfort to the Promise of the Star.
We ask no special favors, Lord, except to hope You'll bless
The friends and kin whom we hold dear, with Christmas happiness.

Out My Window

Out my window
A gatherin' of clouds
Has hid the stars away
And turned them to flakes,
Fat flakes,
Falling gently gently falling
Onto the backs
Of the two bay mares.

It's Christmas.

Michael Martin Murphey's Cowboy Christmas Ball
National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum    Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

From the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum press release:

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Western Music Hall of Fame member Michael Martin Murphey has become guardian of one of America's most original traditions. Cowboy Christmas and Cowboy Christmas Ball have been granted U.S. Federal Trademark protection through Murphey's extensive efforts to protect an event that was first held in 1885 at the Star Hotel in Anson, Texas. Murphey brings the popular event to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, December 9, 2005.

M.G. Rhoades, the Star Hotel owner, held the Texas Cowboys' Christmas Ball to honor a popular local cowboy's marriage. Lawrence "Larry" Chittenden, a young reporter for the New York Times was staying at the Star Hotel at the time while visiting his uncle who owned a ranch in the area. He composed a whimsical poem about the dance that was published in the local Texas Western newspaper, June 19, 1890. The poem eventually became a song and was included in John Lomax's 1922 book, Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads. [Ed note:  read the poem here at CowboyPoetry.com.]

Dancing, sometimes associated with rowdy honky-tonks, was once frowned upon by some of the straight-laced citizens around Anson who nearly closed the soiree down. But in 1934, Miss Leonora Barrett, an Anson school teacher who recognized the event as an American folk heritage gem, gathered support by presenting family friendly guidelines that included 1880s dances and music, alcohol-free beverages and a no-smoking policy.

Today, Murphey observes these guidelines as he takes his band on tour throughout the holiday season. The Cowboy Christmas Ball, an annual event at the National Cowboy Museum, will include a buffet dinner and visit from Santa Claus.

Presenting sponsor for the evening is Express Ranches with major support from Devon Energy Corporation, Mustang Fuel Corporation, Dobson Communications Corporation and The Oklahoman. For more information and reservations call (405) 478-2250, Ext. 219 or visit

Cowboy Country Christmas Festival  Kelowna and Kamloops, British Columbia

Grab your hat, boots and non-perishable food items and come celebrate an extravaganza of everything cowboy and country during A Cowboy Country Christmas Festival presented by Robbie Brown's Guitar Town. The jamboree takes place December 17 at the Kelowna Community Theatre and December 19, 2005 at the Kamloops Sagebrush Theatre.

Keeping in the festive spirit, the Cowboy Country Christmas will be focusing on the less fortunate. The Food Bank, the event's charity of choice-- is dedicated to helping local individuals and families who are in temporary financial difficulty and in need of food. They are a self-supporting, non-profit organization, serving residents by raising money and food through donations and special fundraising events--like this one.

The host is Canadian cowboy poet extraordinaire, Mike Puhallo the most widely published cowboy poet in Canada, and perhaps the only one crazy enough to attempt to make a living from his verse. He has co-authored five books of cowboy poetry with illustrator Wendy Liddle.

Special headliner is Canadian music superstar Rick Tippe and his band who have crossed the nation with one of the busiest tour schedules in Canada. All 21 of his last singles have been top 40 hits on the country music charts across Canada. His inspirational hit "Keepin' the Faith" raised close to $25,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Rick is also known for his 13 music videos airing on CMT Canada.

Another country music legend at the festival is Diamond Joe White who back in the 70s and 80s played Alberta's clubs, halls and jamborees. For 25 years, Diamond Joe has been the rough-hewn poet laureate of the oil rigs and rodeos. With a style from yesteryear, Diamond Joe serves up captivating earthy Canadiana through prairie gospel, blue-collar stomp-alongs and poignant ballads.

Western singer/songwriter Matt E. Johnston has made his living as a farrier for about 20 years. Matt is gaining recognition throughout North America as one of the best there is at capturing the mood of the real west in his music. He has been actively entertaining folks at cowboy festivals and gatherings since 1999. The Academy of Western Artists in Fort Worth nominated him for the "Rising Star Award" for 2002. Matt's songs are now getting airplay on Western Music radio.

Canadian born singing sensation Roger Gabriel will steal your heart away with his remarkable lyrical style and good ole boy charm-he will be performing with vocalist Rachel Matkin with a special guest appearance by Jim "Pa" Ryan & Gary Smyth from the Cruzeros.

Aimee Pettersen's ascendance as a vocalist and entertainer has been conducted at an amazing velocity. Nashville based music promoter/songwriter Mark Trail became a fan, and started promoting Aimee and her music on his compilation CD, sent to almost every country radio station in Canada and the US. Mark also brought Aimee to the attention of Gilles Goddard, a Nashville based Canadian songwriter with a publishing relationship with Curb Records, a major label distributed by EMI. Gilles (along with Mark and Nashville
performer/producer Willie Mack) had composed an upbeat song entitled "Loud and Loco", and decided to let Aimee take a swing at recording it. The results were electrifying! It had been two years since the recording of "Living Proof", and the improvements in Aimee's voice and delivery were apparent. Aimee traveled to Nashville to participate in a showcase, and everyone agrees. Aimee is ready for prime time.

Lobby entertainment also includes Cowgirl Julie and Sidekick Rick, who will present a highly entertaining hoedown of cowboy, pioneer, old time, folk and swing tunes. See rope tricks, spin a rope yourself, don a cowboy hat and play a rhythm instrument. Cowgirl Julie and Sidekick Rick have performed on the Kettle Valley Railway Steam Train since 1995.

The festival also includes food from Montana's Cookhouse Restaurant, a cash bar, dancing, country Christmas crafts, country retailers, Santa Claus, food bank and displays from country/cowboy artists such as Doug Alcock and Arnold Mosley.

A real Cowboy Santa will be on site! BC Country Music Hall of Fame Inductee, Bud Webb will play Santa and maybe sing us a couple of tunes!

Many more activities & performers yet to be confirmed. Stay tuned for more information on this upcoming exciting event. Fun for the whole family!

Tickets are available for the Kelowna show on December 17th at Ticketmaster or charge by phone by calling 250-860-1470. Tickets for the Kamloops show are available at the Live Box Office (374-5483) in Kamloops.

Adults $22, Seniors & Students $18, and children under 12 only $10! Box office fees may apply.

For more information please call Teena Clipston, 250 861-4677 or Mike Puhallo at 250 579-5667
