Boots was a widely-respected magazine, filled with poetry and features, edited by Ethelella "Ethie" Corrigan of Challis, Idaho, 1990-1995. Each comprehensive issue covered Cowboy Poetry, Western arts, and Western heritage. Debates about free verse and "What is Cowboy Poetry" were popular, on-going features in the magazine. Our thanks to poets Ellie Corrigan and Roberta Green, sister and aunt of Boots editor Ethie Corrigan, for their assistance. When we asked Ellie for a few words about the history of the magazine, she replied: "As for a summary of the Boots Magazine history, it evolved with my sister Ethie, it was her baby, she thought it was a way to make a few bucks and at the same time preserve the old stories for future generations. She sold all the ads to finance publication. I wrote a few jingles for some of her ads. When she died the magazine did too. Ethie's friendly smile, her way with people, coupled with years of teaching English and working on the high school annuals, all helped in her being able to put this fine magazine in front of the public. I am so pleased it will now take its place in western lore history." Special thanks to poet Gene O'Quinn who did the initial indexing of the poetry in these issues. Colen Sweeten was Ethie Corrigan's friend, and he wrote a poetic tribute to her, recited at her funeral. The poem is below.
Below is a collective index of poetry published in Boots. There are also individual indexes for each issue that include listings of some prose as well as poetry.
We've indexed many books and some periodicals to help readers find poetry by their favorite Cowboy Poets. Along with current popular Cowboy Poetry anthologies, there are many out-of-print and hard-to-find anthologies, and we hope to include many books in our project, which will be added to continually. There is a list of all indexed books and a master index of poets here. Poets in periodicals currently are not included in the master index. As we add to this project, we welcome your suggestions for publications to include. Please email us with your comments.
